Angelique kerber and alexander zverev have mastered the next step on their hoped-for way to the final at the hopman cup despite some problems.
Germany’s two best tennis players won their competitive singles matches in a 2-1 win over france in perth to claim their second success in their second group match. "I hope angie and i can continue like this," said zverev.
Three-time grand slam tournament winner kerber battled back from a lost first set against alize cornet to prevail 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. The player from kiel committed a considerable number of unforced errors (43) and showed weaknesses in her service games. "I’m trying to find my game, my rhythm and trying new things on the court," kerber said. "It’s always good for me to have a long, close match."
Zverev then also defeated lucas pouille in three sets 6:3, 6:7 (6:8), 6:2. That was already the overall win after the two singles. In the tiebreak of the second set, the world number four missed a match point. "Lucas fought well and played really well in the important moments," summed up the 21-year-old from hamburg. Kerber/zverev lost the final mixed against cornet/pouille in two shortened sets 3:4 (4:5), 3:4 (3:5).
Kerber and zverev won their first match at the unofficial mixed world championships against spain 3:0. The two of them can now make it to the finals against the unpleasant ashleigh barty and the outsider matthew ebden. Australia also has two wins after 2-1 win over spain.
Another final against switzerland, against whom kerber and zverev missed out on success in last year’s hopman cup, seems possible. The defending champions with roger federer and belinda bencic have also already won twice in the other group and will face greece on thursday. The final will be played on saturday.
